The exhibition presents a range of approaches and themes, yet they are connected by a shared line: an attempt to understand something more closely, to uncover layers, often through the recurring motif of a journey.
A journey does not necessarily have to lead to a destination; it can become the destination itself. From the attempt to capture a city shaped by the country’s largest export industry, a city whose structure seems designed less for people than for the gears of its most significant export. In another project, we follow a figure carrying a symbolic Morana through the landscape surrounding the Bílina River, which only a few decades ago could have had an intensely purple color, and now winds through post-industrial terrain searching for a new form of life.
Voices in the landscape. Voices reviving old songs that separate and overlap in different tones and shades, leading us into a sonic space or perhaps somewhere above all of it.
Out of this, we may suddenly be pulled into a journey inward. Through Instagram comments, one project appears to mock a certain esoteric desire for self-discovery from the position of a young European seeking wisdom through an exotic package holiday, while at the same time touching on some of the most pressing questions of the present.
Distant and mostly inaccessible places, easily visited yet closed to the public, become objects of fascination and speculation about their meaning. The journey can also turn inward, toward corporeality with all its pain and capacity for regeneration or all the way to China, where the format of drag queen shows reveals its own strategies of survival within a system that feels the need to regulate even the body itself.
