Women’s rights worldwide, including in Europe, are increasingly threatened by current political events, where many anti-feminist, misogynistic kickbacks are witnessed. Just last year, according to UN Women, 1 in 4 countries reported backlash on women’s rights.
In this roundtable featuring Eva and Magdalena, we will highlight the importance of gender studies, which is a field of research facing increasing challenges and threats as an academic discipline. Not only its scientific nature is often called into question, but gender studies scholars are also targeted by online public harassment. These systematic and systemic attacks on Gender Studies are part of the “anti-gender” movement, which is gaining much support all over Europe.
This Club sciences session will discuss the roots of this anti-gender movement, drawing particular attention to Central Europe. By inviting gender studies scholars, our club sciences also aims to popularise this scientific field and to reassert its scientific value, exploring how gender studies contribute to broader social progress.
Eva Svatoňova holds a PhD in sociology, she is interested in anti-gender and anti-feminist movements, their connexions with far-right, as well as cultural wars in Central Europe.
Magdalena Michlová is a doctoral researcher in sociology at Charles University in Prague, researching student feminist activism in post-socialist contexts.
